Fabio Mourilhe is postdoctoral researcher and collaborator professor at PPGAV / EBA / UFRJ.
His current work deals with the image in comics with his models of production, functions,
nature, transformations and significations, and its relations with other visual arts and
imaginaries of mass culture and popular culture. This approach is accompanied by issues
concerning the philosophy of the image, philosophy of art and contemporary aesthetics. This
research profile is in consonance with the academic production of the Image and Culture
research line of PPGAV and the group of philosophy of image studies Imaginata. He has a PhD
in philosophy at IFCS / UFRJ, his thesis "The aesthetics of the grotesque in comics", defended in
2014, deals with an extension of his study on the theme held in 2011. He was enrolled in a
doctor-sandwich program with Richard Shusterman in 2013 at FAU (USA). He holds a Master's
degree in Design from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) (2006),
Bachelor and Graduated in philosophy from the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro
(UERJ), Bachelor in Computer Science, Graduated in Web Design and graduated in Music
Arrangement. Fabio Mourilhe teaches comics and philosophy for undergraduate courses in
philosophy at IFCS / UFRJ since 2012, and for Visual Communication EBA / UFRJ since 2016. His
latest lines of research from 2011 were developed and organized into study groups,
publications and presentations in an annual rate combined with the Colloquium philosophy
and comics, an event that in the year 2016 is in its 6 th edition and deals with the work
“Sandman” by Neil Gaiman. Before that, it dealt with the relationship between comics and
philosophy (2011), articulations of comics and art (2012), the grotesque (2013), eroticism
(2014), and Charlie Hebdo (2015). He has professional experience in website design and sound
design; composition, recording and musical production; and graphic design and publishing. He
has published dozens of articles in specialized periodicals and annals of events; participated in
several relevant national and international academic events; and interacted with some
collaborators in co-authoring of scientific works. He is the author of several books, among
them "O quadro nos quadrinhos" e "Cuidado de si e aufklarung: caminhos para a vida como
obra de arte".
