History of Landscaping
Since the second half of 2004 this group, coordinated by Dr. Carlos Gonçalves Terra, has been articulating discussions and activities aimed at the study of landscaping and the dissemination of landscaping art. Highlights in chronological order: 1. the development of the book “Arborização: ensaios historiográficos” (Forestation: historiographic essays); 2. organisation of the Seminar on (Re)Constructing Landscaping in Rio’s Passeio Público park, held on 01/12/04 at the Brazilian Architect’s Institute in Rio (IAB/RJ). In 2005 the group remained active supporting events, ministering courses and research. Among its activities: 1. the Leituras Paisagísticas1 course (Landscaping Readings1): theory and praxis – a 40 hour extension course. In 2006 the group accomplished: 1. the launch, on 05/04 at the School of Music, of the first edition of the magazine ‘Revista Leituras Paisagísticas: teoria e praxis’ dedicated exclusively to Rio’s Passeio Públic park; 2. the Landscape Readings 2: theory and praxis extension course began on 15th May with eight meetings and a technical visit, 20 hours in total. In 2007 the group promoted: 1. the extension course Landscaping Readings 3: theory and praxis from 01/10/2007 to 26/11, with eight meetings and a technical visit, 20 hours in total; 2. the launch, on 06/11 at Rio’s Museum of the Republic, of the second edition of the magazine ‘Revista Leituras Paisagísticas: teoria e praxis’ dedicated exclusively to Auguste Glaziou. In May 2008, the group was responsible for the 3rd South American Landscaping Seminar: Cultural Landscapes, launching 6 volumes during the event – 3 were participants’ texts, another a collection of the main lectures, and two catalogues of exhibitions run in parallel on Roberto Burle Marx and Tizianna Buonazzola. In 2009 the International Seminar about Antoine Glaziou took place at Gustavo Capanema Palace in Rio, with 12 French and 12 Brazilian researchers taking part. The third edition of the ‘Revista Leituras Paisagísticas’ dedicated to Burle Marx was launched. In 2010 the Avesso da Paisagem (Landscaping Inside Out) Colloquium took place with foreign and Brazilian researchers taking part. In November the Archaeology of Landscaping Seminar took place.
