The Semiotics of Images and Cultural Representations

This research group has been developing various teaching, research and extension activities within the Visual Arts Postgraduate Programme at UFRJ’s School of Fine Arts and involves the participation of researchers from other institutions. Its aim is to study processes of creation in the visual arts and their implications for culture and society, using pertinent methodological procedures of the semiotics of images which are manifest in the production of signs and significations, based on the following areas: semiotic statute of the image; imagination and look; image, narrative, mimesis and simulacrum; values and functions of the image; the iconic, plastic and linguistic discourse of images; visual encodings of cultural representations.
